About Me

I am 18 years old, a microbiology major with a french minor on the pre-med track here at the University of Maryland. My dream is to be an OB/GYN. I am from Saint Martin/Sint Maarten and moved to the United States in 2014. Since then, I have been working hard to achieve my goals and dreams. I am a Banneker/Key scholar here on campus as well as in the Gemstone Honors program. I am currently on Caribbean Student Association's cabinet and am on CRD's Community service community.

The purpose of this blog is to share my journey with others, connect with my friends and family abroad, as well as provide advice and inspiration in any way I can. If you would like to learn more about me feel free to read previous blogs as I believe that they will give a good insight into my character and personality.

What is Charles R. Drew Society?

Charles R. Drew is a pre-medical/pre-health society at the University of Maryland. The society's goal is to provide meaningful opportunities to minority pre-health students and increase their preparedness for professional students.

Why do I want to run for secretary?

I want to be secretary because I believe in CRD's mission statement to support minority groups who are seeking to enter the healthcare fields as we are often underrepresented in those areas. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, only 6% of medical school graduates were African American and only 5% were Hispanic or Latina. Therefore, this organization is so important to support and create a network for such students as we start our journey towards professional schools.

I believe that I have the skills and mindset to fulfill the requirements of the secretary position and I would be honored to serve on the executive board of this society.

What can you expect of me if I am elected as secretary?

As secretary I promise to:

  • Sent out newsletters and emails to inform members of upcoming events

  • Respond to emails in a timely and organized fashion

  • Work along side the other executive board members to provide meaningful events for members

  • Keep track of attendance and membership points

  • And take minutes during executive board meetings

I believe that I am capable of these responsibilities because I am a very organized, responsible, cooperative, a team player, and am approachable and friendly. If elected I can assure that I will do these responsibilities to my best abilities!

My visions for the future of CRD...

Charles R Drew is an amazing origination, I think we can continue to support minority pre-health students on campus by being even more united. I would like to see more social and bonding events, especially towards the beginning of new semesters. We should have a forum, for example a group chat, where we can reach out to one another. We could even have a "big-little" sign up in which younger students can learn from the experiences of the older students. I learn so much from listening to other's experiences so I believe adding these features will increase the unity and improve the learning experience in the society.

What are my past leadership roles/qualifications?

  • Secretary and President of French Honor Society (HS)

  • Vice president of Student Government Association (HS)

  • Students of the Year Campaign for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (HS) read more about here

  • Cabinet member of Caribbean Student Association

  • International Liaison of Gemstone Terps for St. Maarten (after Hurricane Irma wrecked havoc on my island, I led a team of my amazing fellow peers and collected over 500 items. I organized the collaboration with a non-profit on the island and managed the delivery of the items from UMD to the Caribbean.)

I would be honored to serve as secretary and I promise to fulfill all responsibilities to the best of my abilities. Please vote for me!

Voting will occur from April 23rd - 27th
